Brittany Slaton, daughter of Teresa and Doug Slaton Jr. of Hollister, California, is competing as Miss Clovis Rodeo. This 20 year-old is currently studying at Gavilan College working to achieve an Associates Degree in Communications with plans to transfer to Cal State University-Fresno to earn her Bachelor's Degree. Brittany has been riding horses since age 11 competing in English and Western Pleasure. In high school she began participating in 4-H and high school rodeo events such as barrel racing, pole bending and cutting. Most recently she has been active in reining classes. While actively competing in and acquiring titles to various horse and rodeo organizations she has enjoyed being a representative of rodeo, the equine industry and the western way of life. Outside of the arena Brittany enjoys dancing, baking and photography.



Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2010 Contest Information

Contest opens February 14th

Each July, several young women converge upon Salinas to participate in the challenge of the Miss California Rodeo Salinas Contest.  Contest Chairman Laurie LaVelle and California Rodeo President Craig Andrus invite you to join us in the celebration of our California Rodeo Salinas 100th Anniversary and the Miss California Rodeo Salinas Contest!

The contest winner will receive a $2,500 cash scholarship to be used at the college of her choice, a gold and silver trophy belt buckle, the use of a two-horse trailer for one year, along with many other lovely gifts and the honor of wearing the Miss California Rodeo Salinas gold and silver tiara.

Our 2009 Miss California Rodeo Salinas, Brittany Slaton, will be traveling to rodeos, parades and events throughout the state promoting our contest and our rodeo.  We hope you have the opportunity to meet her and hear about her exciting year.

Eligibility

Competition is open to young women 18 - 21 years of age. Contestants must be at least 18 years old by July 1, 2010 without having turned 22 by July 31, 2010. Contestants may enter the contest more than once, but may only win once, and may not have been married or pregnant at any time.

In order to be eligible, contestants must be sponsored by either a recognized horsemen's organization or another recognized community organization (not commercial). There is no entry fee for the privilege of competing. Contestants will be required to sign a liability waiver and acceptance of responsibility form.

Scoring

Contestants are judged on horsemanship (40%), personality (30%), appearance (20%) and scholarship (10%). Horsemanship will include a short reining pattern and a presentation run on contestant's own horse, plus a draw for the exchange of contestants' horses. Personality and appearance judging will involve a brief private interview and friendly impromptu questions before an audience. The scholarship section will include a short examination.

THERE WILL BE SPECIFIC CHANGES TO THE ATTIRE GUIDELINES FOR SOME OF THE CONTEST'S EVENTS THIS YEAR.  Please contact us for a list of attire guidelines for 2010!

With your contestant application, essay and horse pen fee, you must also submit three (3) black and white glossy 8x10 photos in Western attire (all the same pose). These photographs and any others taken in connection with the event may be used to publicize the California Rodeo. All entries must be POSTMARKED by Friday, May 7, 2010 (registered mail recommended). Upon the acceptance of your application, a detailed information packet will be sent to each contestant. Official headquarters for the Miss California Rodeo Salinas contestants will be the Laurel Inn, 801 W. Laurel Drive, Salinas, CA, (831) 449-2474. Reservations at this hotel are MANDATORY for July 13, 14, 15, 2010 and MUST BE MADE DIRECTLY BY CONTESTANT BY THE ENTRY DEADLINE of FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2010. The California Rodeo Association will pay the hotel expenses (Thursday - Sunday) of the winning contestant only. All contestants must be accompanied by a chaperone.
