The California Rodeo Salinas will return to its annual July dates in 2022 with the 112th celebration of the event taking place July 21st-24th. The Association was proud to see the local community rally around the California Rodeo Salinas and its volunteers for a big comeback in 2021. Over 54,000 people attended the 4 performances, slightly down from 2019. This total was more than expected with a late start to advertising due to changing state regulations and a date change that included competing with high school sports and more. Fans who did attend enjoyed highlights including Women’s Breakaway Roping taking place in the arena for the first time, Rodeo Entertainer Matt Merritt amusing the crowds and the fast-paced acts by the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls who trick roped and rode. Salute to Military Day included a tribute to the fallen soldiers in Afghanistan and the final round on Sunday featured the top 8 contestants competing in each event before the top 4 came back for the final sudden death round. 1st place winners took home $10,000 in that round alone. All four performances of the California Rodeo Salinas were aired live nationally on The Cowboy Channel and streamed live on The Cowboy Channel + app.
The patrons who attended the events contributed to the annual donation number of $376,686.03 by parking, eating and more. Checks were presented this evening to various non-profit groups who staffed areas and completed tasks necessary to host the events during the four days of the California Rodeo Salinas and one night of Professional Bull Riding. The donation number also includes limited 2020 donations such as discounted or donated rentals for events at the stadium such as vaccine clinics, tickets to local non-profits who use them as fundraisers, a donation to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Posse Junior Rodeo and to the Man Up Crusade. The 2021 total is down from 2019 due to events such as the carnival, Monster Jam and Big Week Kick Off Concert not happening; the stadium was also locked down for most of 2020. “The California Rodeo Association is happy to ramp up our donations after two long years. It’s nice to see events taking place and local groups having activities. We hope everyone continues to thrive in the future,” said Jim Slaten, General Manager of the Salinas Sports Complex.
