The California Rodeo Salinas aims to preserve and promote the traditions of the west and one way to achieve that goal is to teach children about rodeo at a young age. Many of the events that the California Rodeo Association produces allow children to not only learn about rodeo, but to experience parts of it.
Aspiring young cowboys and cowgirls can sign up for the mutton busting event presented by Pacific Valley Bank at all four California Rodeo Salinas performances July 21st-24th. Children ages 4 to 7 with a maximum weight of 60 pounds (on the day of the ride) are eligible to ride sheep in the competition July 21st, 22nd or 23rd. The top three riders with the longest ride times from each day return for the finals on Sunday, July 24th for a chance to win a prize belt buckle.
Entries are due by midnight on June 9, 2022. Entry forms are available at https://www.carodeo.com/events/2022/mutton-busting, but filling out an entry form does not guarantee a spot to ride. Fifty-four riders will be selected in a random drawing on June 10, 2022 and notified the following week. The fee to compete is $40.00; payment is only required if your child is selected to ride.
