Mutton Busting is
one of the most popular events that takes place on the track during the
California Rodeo Salinas. The event involves children ages 4-7 riding
sheep for as long as they can stay on with the longest ride winning. The child,
wearing a helmet and protective vest*, mounts the sheep in a small chute and
hangs on tight when the gate opens. The California Rodeo takes place July 16-19
with three short rounds of Mutton Busting taking place, one on the 16th,
one on the 17th and one on the 18th; the top 3
contestants with the best rides from each day come back on Sunday July 19th
to compete in the long, or championship, round for a belt buckle. The Mutton
Busting event is sponsored by the Laurel Inn Motel & Conference Center.
Due to the
overwhelming popularity of this event, entry forms must be received by Friday
June 12th to be included in the random drawing for contestants. If
you are drawn, a $25.00 entry fee is due which will include a DVD of all of the
Mutton Busting rides over the four days of competition. Children must weigh 60
pounds or less and be between 4 and 7 years old at the time they ride. Entry
forms can be found online at the link below or at the California Rodeo Salinas
Office at 1034 N. Main Street in Salinas. Call 831-775-3100 with any questions.
